Science Fiction has always made current events and issues apparent in storylines and characters. It seems to be the test bed for the reaction to the main stream. Most Sci FI television have shown us our mirrored reflections good, bad or indifferent. We have seen these episodes and have had major discussion about them.
The original Star Trek gave us our first interracial kiss and from that point the stars were the limit. We have had the slavery of other cultures, genocide, and homosexual relationships. We should not diminish our past or be afraid of the future. We are our father and mother's children. We will/should strive to be better human beings. With other Sci Fi series, Star Wars, Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, New Battlestar Galactica, Firefox, Torchwood, Doctor Who, and others we see and discover everyone is different. We see more LGBT characters and even actors. They are not afraid to be who they are and write for themselves.
Sci Fi's openness to write about anything and everything is influencing primetime television. They see how accepting the sci fi community is with LGBT stories and characters, so they want our ratings as well.
This was a great blog...maybe I will discuss this on the panel for the FarPoint Convention.
